Hamilton's Public Works Department, together with Metrolinx, has opened the city's second secure bicycle parking facility as part of an ongoing commitment to promote sustainable transportation options in Hamilton. Funding for this initiative was provided through the Metrolinx BikeLinx program.

The facility, located in the Hamilton Convention Centre Parkade on Summers Lane, can accommodate up to16 bicycles and provides a safe and convenient place for cycling commuters to store their bikes. Hamilton's first secure bicycle parking facility opened last summer in the York Boulevard Parkade, accommodating over 40 bicycles.

"Opening an additional bicycle parking facility in the Downtown Core is another great step in the right direction for a cleaner and greener Hamilton," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger. "I'm confident this new facility will be used and enjoyed by many of our own City staff, as well as residents who commute via bicycle to their destinations."

The City of Hamilton received just over $160,000 in funding from Metrolinx to be used to provide secure bicycle parking facilities as part of the Metrolinx Bikelinx program.

"At Metrolinx, we believe that active transportation is the most sustainable way to get around," said John Howe, VP, Project Evaluation and Investment Strategy. "The Bike Linx Program is one way of encouraging riders to combine cycling and public transportation, two modes of environmentally-friendly transportation. We are promoting a cleaner environment, a healthier population, and more efficient use of expensive public infrastructure."

The new parking facility is now open for public use. Cyclists can purchase a permit by visiting the Municipal Parking Office beside the Convention Centre or by visiting www.smartcommute.ca/hamilton/bikeparking
